French bulldogs have a delightful personality that makes them one of the most desirable dog breeds in the United States. According to the American Kennel Club, Frenchies were the most popular breed in America in 2023, and we understand why. Keep in mind that a French bulldog has some unique dietary, exercise, and health care needs. Our Santa Monica Veterinary Group team describes Frenchie life and how you can help your chien thrive.

French bulldog facts

Aside from their adorable oversized ears and knack for flatulence, the French bulldog was bred to be a toy or companion pet, a miniature English bulldog. After successful crossbreeding in England during the early 1800s, these pint-sized bulldogs became popular in France, where they were then named bouledogue Francais, French bulldog to English speakers. This breed was welcomed to the United States in 1885 and has since become a popular pet choice.

Basic Frenchie care

French bulldogs have specific nutrition and veterinary care needs that sometimes differ from other popular pet breeds. Most notably, Frenchies are brachycephalic, which means they have flat faces and elongated mouth palates that can cause respiratory issues such as breathing difficulties. If you have or are thinking of adopting a French bulldog, stay vigilant about respiratory-related signs.

French bulldog diet

A high-quality diet is essential for any pet, but a breed, such as the French bulldog, requires a specialized diet, since they are prone to certain health issues. Our team recommends a  diet designed for French bulldogs and their overall health needs and dietary requirements. Frenchies can easily gain weight, as they are not the most active breed, so be sure to feed your pooch according to the label on their food’s packaging or your veterinarian’s instructions.

Regular exercise for Frenchies

All pets, including Frenchies, need regular exercise such as walking and playing. While they’re not overly active, French bulldogs need exercise to maintain a healthy weight. Take your French bulldog on two to three short daily walks, with some playtime thrown in. Be mindful that brachycephalic breeds do not tolerate heat and overexertion. If the temperature rises higher than 85 degrees, play fetch with a favorite toy or tug-of-war indoors while the air-conditioning is running.

French bulldog grooming

French bulldogs have a short coat that requires minimal grooming, but they are likely to have dry skin if their diet doesn’t provide healthy fats, such as omega-3 fish oils. Regular brushing each week helps remove loose, coarse fur and keeps your Frenchie’s coat clean and shiny. Additionally, pay close attention to your dog’s facial folds, where bacteria, dirt, and debris can cause an infection if you don’t clean them regularly

Veterinary wellness exams for Frenchies

All pets’ wellness exams are essential to promoting their health, and French bulldogs are no exception. In fact, Frenchies have certain conditions to which they are prone because of breeding and genetics. Ear infections, eye problems, respiratory issues, poor digestion, and—oh, yes—lots of gas are all common Frenchie conditions, but these issues can be managed. Our team at Santa Monica Veterinary Group understands this breed and can help mitigate these common problems through diet and health care intervention.

Socialization and training for French bulldogs

Frenchies are extremely social and friendly dogs who do best when they have people or other dogs around. Like most dogs, French bulldogs are social creatures who need regular interaction with their pack, which includes you. French bulldogs are intelligent and do well with positive reinforcement training, beginning at puppyhood, to help prevent problem behaviors. Their intelligence and quick adaptability make Frenchies pros with most training methods, and they enjoy challenges such as learning new tricks.

Health Insurance for your Frenchie

Considering the conditions to which French bulldogs are prone, we suggest you enroll your pooch in a pet insurance plan. Pet health insurance helps ensure that treatments and veterinary care your four-legged friend’s needs are covered, helping offset costly bills. Discuss options with our team to find a suitable plan for your Frenchie and your wallet. When getting insurance quotes, ensure that the policy does not exclude medical conditions that are consistent with this breed.

Every dog is unique, so tailoring routine care to your Frenchie’s needs is imperative. Despite their small stature, French bulldogs are quirky, curious, and sociable, and have big personalities. With proper attention and care, your special dog can be a delightful and loyal companion for years to come.
