Dogs with injuries or ailments seldom complain, making it difficult for their families to identify early stage or subtle health issues, yet some medical problems require urgent treatment. Our Santa Monica Veterinary Group team outlines common canine conditions that require urgent care, and how you can identify these problems to ensure your pet receives prompt treatment.

1: Ear infections in dogs

Ear infections can cause significant discomfort and irritation and are a frequent concern for dog owners. These infections may occur because of moisture buildup, allergies, or foreign objects in the ear canal. Ear infection signs may include excessive scratching or rubbing of the ears, head shaking, redness or swelling of the ear canal, and a foul odor coming from the ears.

2: Gastrointestinal upset in dogs

Gastrointestinal (GI) upset is a common issue that can occur for various reasons, including dietary indiscretion, toxin ingestion, intestinal parasites, food sensitivities, and bacterial or viral infections. Dogs with an upset stomach may exhibit vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, lethargy, and abdominal discomfort. Indications your dog needs immediate care include known or suspected toxin or foreign body ingestion and if your dog is exhibiting other signs such as bloating, abdominal pain, lethargy, or inappetence.

If your dog has GI upset but otherwise seems OK, they need supportive care while you monitor their condition closely. Offer bland, easily digestible foods, such as boiled chicken and white rice, to help soothe their stomach. Also, ensure they can access plenty of fresh water to prevent dehydration. If the GI upset persists for more than 24 hours or worsens, seek veterinary care.

3: Skin irritation in dogs

Skin irritation also commonly affects dogs of all breeds and ages. Inflammation and irritation may arise because of allergies, parasites, or environmental factors. Skin issue signs include itching, redness, rash, hair loss, hot spots, and lumps or bumps on the skin.

Skin problems can worsen rapidly, and your dog may scratch, lick, and chew until their skin is raw and sore. If you see your dog has skin issues, seek urgent veterinary attention.

4: Lameness in dogs

Limping or lameness in dogs are also concerns for dog owners, because underlying injuries, arthritis, or joint conditions may be indicated. Assessing a limping dog’s affected limb for signs of swelling, heat, or tenderness is essential, as well as observing your dog’s gait and mobility to determine the severity of the problem.

If your dog is limping, ensure their physical activity is minimal to prevent further injury. You can apply a cold compress to the affected area to reduce swelling and inflammation. However, if limping persists or is accompanied by severe pain, schedule an appointment with your Santa Monica Veterinary Group team.

5: Urinary issues in dogs

Canine urinary issues, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) or bladder stones, can cause your dog significant pain while urinating. Signs that may indicate a urinary issue include frequent urination, straining to urinate, blood in the urine, and accidents in the house.

If urinary issues persist, or if you notice blood in your dog’s urine, seek prompt veterinary care. UTIs can become much more difficult to treat and cause painful bladder inflammation if allowed to progress, while bladder stones can lead to a life-threatening urinary blockage.

6: Eye problems in dogs

Eye problems can range from minor irritations to more serious conditions that require urgent attention. Signs of ocular issues in dogs include redness, discharge, squinting, pawing at the eye, and changes in the eye’s appearance.

If you see that your dog has eye issues, don’t wait to see if the problem resolves on its own, because ocular problems are typically painful and can worsen rapidly if left untreated.

Dog owners who understand common urgent care conditions in dogs and can recognize signs of distress are empowered to take appropriate action. While some issues may resolve with home care, others require prompt veterinary intervention to prevent complications and ensure your furry friend receives the care they need.

If you notice any abnormalities in your pet’s habits, behavior, or physical appearance, they may have developed a serious underlying condition that requires urgent care. Give our Santa Monica Veterinary Group team a call to schedule an appointment for immediate veterinary attention.
